Pila
distributed home battery
The Pila battery is a distributed home battery that can provide backup power while requiring no permitting, no contractor installation or permanence that a typical whole home battery requires.
Tom provided complete electronic hardware design across five generations of both the low voltage compute interface and high voltage system PCBAs. These two distinct PCBAs were taken from proof of concept to mass production in an 18-month lifecycle while product requirements were maturing and evolving. This path included architecture, schematic capture, PCBA layout, extensive hardware bringup, EMC pre-certification and hipot testing. Tight multi-disciplinary integration with constant communication between Tom and Pila allowed for rapid development with on-the-fly hardware changes being no factor.
Notable design features include a novel low voltage system architecture to allow for optimized power consumption, a fully controllable USB PD power chain and high speed display interface all while packaged in a tight footprint to meet industrial design needs.
Tom remains involved with Pila as an advisor and multi-unit customer.
